Yuck's Daniel Blumberg performs in New York City, April 2011. Photo: Cory Schwartz/Getty Images

You know it’s been a breakout year when a band’s debut album gets the deluxe reissue treatment in only seven months since they original hit the streets. Such is the case for British shoegaze quartet Yuck, whose self-titled, fuzz-scuzz debut now comes with a bonus disc of six new-ish cuts.

One of those cuts is “Soothe Me,” a melodic number that’s indicative of what this band’s about: Daniel Blumberg’s laid back, mellow vocals, melodic guitar strumming and a host of stuttery guitar and vocal effects that make the whole thing sound ethereal and dramatic. And the lyrics only help this cause even more:  “So sue me, don’t use me, I’m not your oxygen,” the band coos over and over, like little Robert Smiths — it’s drama for drama’s sake and sounds oh-so-pretty in doing so.

The deluxe edition of Yuck is out now on Fat Possum.

Alongside Michael Jackson‘s “Thriller,” Screamin’ Jay Hawkins‘ “I Put A Spell On You,” and the finger-snapping theme to The Addams Family, Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s “Monster Mash” holds a much beloved place in most Halloween-themed playlists. Rightfully so: The gimmicky pop hit based around vocal impersonations of Boris Karloff [ie. the guy who played Frankenstein in all of the original films] stayed at the top of the Billboard pop charts when it was first released in 1966. It’s maintained its campy, parent-friendly endearments for decades since.

In honor of the unfading charm of the track and similar golden-era oldies, Minneapolis’ Mike 2600 and King Otto have made their own forty-five minute soundtrack to Halloween with a Monster Mash mix of Motown, doo-wop, surf rock and “malt shop classics.” Take note: There’s nothing spooky here. In fact, you can expect to happily bop along to songs that your parents once shimmied to [in the vein of Ray Charles, the Beach Boys, the Ronettes and Smokey Robinson]. “Monster Motion,” one of the lesser-known doo-wop tracks from Pickett’s Original Monster Mash, also makes an appearance to prep you for the impending holiday weekend. At the very least, count on this mix to inspire your last-minute sock-hop-themed Halloween costume. [Download via Extra Large Party]

In addition to fun factoids about songs, band name origins are always a cool way to dazzle your friends at cocktail parties. In this clip, from the most recent episode of 120 Minutes with Matt Pinfield, Iron & Wine‘s Sam Beam lets our esteemed host in on the story behind his band’s “romantic”-sounding name.
